Christian Aid is partnering with others to end poverty in Africa. At the heart of this vision is transformation of the lives of people who live in poverty, empowering them to have a brighter future and saving lives during emergencies.

In 20 countries across the continent, we manage a wide range of humanitarian and development programmes that have a positive impact on the lives of millions. And while we’ve achieved some incredible results, there’s still a lot we can do.

This is why we are looking for a dynamic and highly skilled individual to help drive forward our humanitarian work on Cash and Markets in the continent.

As the Senior Humanitarian Advisor, Cash and Markets you will operate in three environments.

Firstly, you will support the country programmes to develop an effective portfolio of humanitarian programmes on cash and markets. To do this you will provide technical support to country programme staff, assisting them in programme design, implementation, fundraising and partnership development. You will alsoprovide surge capacity for emergency response in Africa.

Secondly, you will support broader thinking and strategy development across the Humanitarian Division and Christian Aid relating to the development of good programme practice and the integration of cash and markets in emergency and resilience programmes.

Lastly you will have an external facing element, helping Chistian Aid engage in the right networks, increasing the profile of Chistian Aid emergency cash and market related work, ensuring we are influenced by current good practise and opening up opportunities for new productive collaborations.

To help make this happen, you will bring a sound background of excellent working knowledge of cash and market based emergency programming. You will have a good knowledge of emergency relief, rehabilitation and development issues including capacity building tools and techniques, understanding of participatory vulnerability and capacity assessments, understanding of the partnership approach to emergency work. You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to provide remote technical support and develop cross-organisational relationships and be confident in engaging with external networks and actors. You will have experience in supporting learning and development, have experience of working via local partners and understand linkages between cash, markets and resilient livelihoods.

Please show your suitability for this post by giving answers to the following three questions. Using the guidance notes  will help you to formulate your answers.

Please tell us about a time when you used the cash method to deliver an emergency programme in a complex humanitarian context where cash was not initially the preferred option. Please elaborate on what the context was, the steps you followed and the results.

Build partnerships

Give us an example of a time when you had to influence other people in an emergency setting and to persuade them to work in a collaborative way when there were different personal or organisational agendas.

Communicate effectively

Tell us about a time when you had to adapt your style, approach, and delivery method in a humanitarian context to communicate effectively with a particular audience.

We value the contribution each person makes to the success of our organisation. That’s why you can expect a wide range of rewards and benefits and flexibility that will ensure you enjoy a good work/life balance.

You will require current and valid permission to work in the relevant country.
