About the Infrastructure and Climate Change Practice For 21 years, we have worked at the leading edge of infrastructure reform with a more recent focus on climate change, regional integration and transport corridors. Our capacity to deliver rapid high impact results – particularly in the field of infrastructure – has earned numerous international project management awards, such as the most recent 2011/12 British Expertise Development Project of the Year for our work on NIAF in Nigeria. Tackling the inefficiency and financial burden imposed by under-performing infrastructure is an important issue for most developing and transitional countries. A lack of adequate infrastructure is a major impediment to the effective development of the wider economy. It

is both of value in itself (e.g. with clean water providing clear and obvious direct benefits) and as a multiplier, enabling further development and allowing governments to achieve their social, economic and political aims. Our work in infrastructure focuses on policy, strategy, regulation, financing (private sector participation and public-private partnership) and utility reform in the following sectors energy, water and sanitation, transport, telecommunications, urban development and climate change.

About the Role Our Infrastructure and Climate Change Practice is growing. Fast. We need a strong Senior Manager to join us. Reporting directly to the Practice Director, we're looking for someone out of the ordinary, who likes variety and can adapt to a challenge. This particular role is high-profile and based primarily in Africa, leading a multi-million pound power sector reform project.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overall delivery of the power sector reform project
  • Managing the project team and consultants
  • Ensuring that outputs are delivered as required by the project Terms of Reference and/or activity plans subsequently agreed
  • Working with the project technical teams and the Project Director to ensure that work is delivered to a technical standard that fully meets client requirements
  • Assisting in the preparation and editing of reports and other deliverables
  • Managing contractual relationships with sub-contractors and associates
  • Managing the relationship between ASI, the beneficial client and the donor agency
  • Overseeing project logistics and domestic arrangements
  • Ensuring effective financial management of projects
  • Resolving disputes
  • Keeping the Project Director fully informed of progress and issues arising and supporting him/her in exercising project oversight and quality control.

In addition to the specific role described above, Senior Managers play a fundamental role in our operating model, managing the technical and financial performance of projects, as well as leading business development. This involves developing a clear strategy to consolidate and develop our growing team, including:

  • Mapping actors and opportunities in the climate sector
  • Identifying target sectors and competitive advantages for the Practice
  • Building a strong team of Associates
  • Writing winning proposals with little assistance, for key donors such as DFID, AusAid and the World Bank
  • Identifying and leading the selling process for large projects on both a competitive and non-competitive basis

About You

carefully selected, based not just on their technical ability, but on their proven experience. It's this combination that ensures we deliver real societal impact and measurable results beyond those anticipated. You should be confident in leading multi-million pound projects and have practical project delivery experience in Africa. You will be field-based for a minimum of 2 years and should have demonstrated ability to build productive relationships with people from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds, to work effectively in politically sensitive and physically challenging environments, and ability to work well within a team environment. Experience in the power sector is highly desirable but not essential. All our team members play a key part in developing new business for the company. You should be confident and capable in leading business development activities and converting these into contracts. You potentially bring established relationships with donor organisations and freelance associates.

Essential

  • Experience of leading multi-million pound projects
  • Experience of project delivery in Africa
  • Extensive experience in project management preferably with a leading consultancy
  • Experience in building and leading effective teams
  • Experience winning and developing climate opportunities
  • A proven track record of crafting and winning competitively tendered proposals
  • Excellent computer skills across Microsoft products
  • Excellent communication skills

Highly desirable

  • Experience in the power sector
  • Experience working in Africa and South Asia – conflict affected areas a plus
