Project Background:
Targeting 147,000 individuals in the Cross River territory, My Gorilla – My Community will engage local communities in dialogue and activities that promote the conservation of the endangered Cross River gorillas in Cameroon and Nigeria through an entertainment-education radio drama, Linda’s Joint, complemented by campaign activities and call-in shows. The Communications for Behavior Change program aspires to conserve the habitat for the last remaining gorillas, and to promote the end of activities such as illegal hunting and deforestation while encouraging new opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. In partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the program aims to engage local communities to adopt actions that are good for the environment, the people and the gorillas.

About the CR Gorilla Campaign Manager Position:

This is a joint PCI Media Impact and WCS position. Contracted by WCS, the position will have on-going support and mentoring support from PCI Media Impact. PCI Media Impact is an international NGO working in over 25 countries to save critical ecosystems and species. PCI Media Impact will support all aspects of this communications campaign, and will provide dedicated mentoring staff. The CR Gorilla Campaign Manager will be responsible for managing the communications campaigns component in Nigeria and Cameroon, and will serve as the primary WCS focal point for collaboration with NGO and government agency partners in implementing the communications campaigns. The CR Gorilla Campaign Manager will have the specific responsibility of managing and leading a Behavior Change Campaign through the development and production of an on-going Serial Radio Drama, complementary Interactive Radio Magazine Shows and Community Mobilization Campaigns in targeted communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide overall communications support to the 5-year Cross River Gorilla Communications Plan. As such, will work with partners of the plan to develop and implement a landscape-wide communications for behavior change program.
• Under the supervision of WCS, with distance mentoring from PCI Media Impact, implement a “My Gorilla Action Campaign and Radio Call-In Show Strategy” and work with regional coalition members to ensure successful design and implementation of campaigns and national radio call-in shows toward established goals and objectives.
• Ensure that campaign and drama production are completed on time and within budget.
• Ensure broadcast agreements are in place with radio partners and programs are broadcast as scheduled.
• Support and work in close collaboration with WCS, PCI Media Impact and local partners to successfully implement the agreed campaign. This includes participating in planning meetings, establishing work plans, communication and evaluation plans, budgets and managing contracts.
• Work with WCS and PCI Media Impact to plan and organize campaign related activities in the target communities of the project.
• Work with WCS, Media Impact and other partners to implement a Monitoring and Evaluation plan, including surveys and qualitative measures, to measure campaign impacts.
• Support Entertainment-Education workshops delivered by WCS and PCI Media Impact for relevant partners and stakeholders.
• Maintain relationships with the radio drama and magazine program production teams, existing scriptwriters, producers and directors, actors, hosts and recording/editing studios.
• Support the development of all the required material and documentation for the radio drama, including story synopsis, character profiles, final scripts, etc.
• Review and guide script development for the radio drama episodes, including the development and finalization of all core planning documents (e.g. Theory of Change and Knowledge-Attitude-Behavior Change documents).
• Periodic travel to Cameroon may be required depending on the current needs of the project.
• Additional tasks may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge Requirements:

• Education and/or experience equivalent to an University Degree in communications for development (C4D), international development, journalism, Entertainment-Education, social marketing or a field relevant to media/communications and environment.
• Strong understanding of issues impacting developing countries, particularly around biodiversity conservation, sustainable livelihoods and sustainable development.
• Strong computer and internet skills required.
• 2 years of work experience in a communications role for a project or organization.
• Project management, planning and report writing experience required.
• Ability to work and communicate with a range of stakeholders including policymakers and government officials, NGOs, the media, community representatives
• Ability to thrive in team environments, with a strong understanding of diversity and other cultures.
• Experience conducting training workshops will be an asset.
• Fluency in spoken and written English. French proficiency will be an asset.
• Experience using and/or organizing media relations, web/mobile/social media, print and events will be an asset.
• Candidate is ideally Nigerian and immediately available to work in Nigeria.
