Are You Ready for that Interview???

Job interview is an integral part of any organizations recruitment process. Getting through an interview successfully is not always easy. My experience as a former employee and currently a part time Hr consultant has informed me of costly common errors made during interviews. Some of these errors I will share below.

1: Lack Of Research:  After going through the first stage of selection. The second stage of selection is usually the interview process. This can be in various stages and can take various forms such as telephone interview, web chat Interviews, one on one interviews etc. some people go in for such interviews without an in-depth study or research on the organization recruiting.  In 2008, an alternate energy company was recruiting for various positions here in Lagos. One of the applicants who applied for the role of Sales executive, during the second stage of the interview was asked the simplest  question which was what the business was into and he couldn’t answer, let alone the history of the business. To cut the long story short, that was the end of the interview. With Google, Bing, information is now at your finger tips. Equip yourself with sufficient information about the recruiting organization. Do your homework.

2: Poor Resume/Cv: Resumes/CV’s should be clear and factual. Some job applicants copy other people’s resume without editing the unnecessary parts. This information is a false representation and could prove fatal during an interview. I recommend not copying but if you must do ensure that the qualifications and skills listed are factual and can be proven. Be thorough when constructing your CV and contact the help of sound professionals if need be. Be factual.

3: Personal feelings: never speak badly of your previous or incumbent employer. Regardless of the condition of service or broken relationship. An interview is not a stage for airing dirty laundry. During a particular interview I was part of, an applicant was asked why she wanted to leave her current place of work. Her answer was that she wasn’t being paid and that she was being owed for months. Such answer contributes poorly to an interview result. A reasonable answer would have been “I’m leaving / I applied for this role because I want a bigger challenge or I want to leave because I want to further my career in so and so role ….etc.” that sounds better don’t you think? Never paint your past employer in a bad light. No organization will be willing to hire employees that will give it a bad representation. Choose your words carefully.

4: Achievements VS Descriptions: 90 percent of Resumes/Cv’s simply itemize job descriptions. Not that this is completely bad but multinational Organizations are looking for success stories and not just job descriptions that can be copied via Google search etc. your resume should be able to state your achievement after you have listed your job description. This particular factor distinguishes you from the rest. Don’t just state what you do, also state your achievements. Your achievements are your major selling points. An indicator that you can and have done the job before successfully. Dare to be different.
