Writer - Talent Pool

BBC Media Action is the international development charity of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), working in over 25 countries across the world. BBC Media Action works in partnership with local media agencies, civil society organisations, and governments to achieve long term development goals. We produce creative media content to inform and engage audiences, and strengthen the media sector by building professional skills and technical capacity.

BBC Media Action is looking for interested/motivated freelance candidates to join the Nigeria team’s Talent Pool, comprising talented Writers to work on our award-winning dramas in English and Hausa.

Acceptance into the Talent Pool does not guarantee an offer of freelance work, but the pool represents BBC Media Action’s first point of call for freelancers working on our dramas.

As freelance positions become vacant, hiring managers will contact suitable candidates from the pool to ascertain availability for roles.

Below is an outline of expected duties for the Writers, which may also be expanded upon to suit the needs of the drama as required.

Duties and Deliverables

  • Review prior series of the drama to know where we left each character (where previous series exist)
  • Follow the guidance of the Head Writer, Producer and Assistant Producers.
  • As part of a writing team, plan and write the spine story for the drama series with support from Head Writer
  • Develop new character stories for the series with support from the Head Writer
  • Ensure good continuity of story for the series.
  • Reviewing and re-writing of stories that might not be balanced or that could negatively affect editorial values or negate the message driving process.
  • Participate in reading and listening sessions with other writers
  • Deliver a first draft and final draft of drama series scripts.
  • Incorporate BBC Media Action audience research feedback into revision of the drama’s final scripts
  • The Writer will also render all such services and any other such services which are usually rendered by a Freelance Writer for events suitable for broad/web cast by the BBC, as required by the drama

  • Bello, a young rural teacher, and one of the male principals in the drama, returns home one night after prayers to find his wife, Hafsa fretting over their lack of money.
  • He tries to comfort her, worried that she will leave him for one of her former, rich suitors
  • He makes a rash promise that they will move to the city, so he can find a better paid job, but has no idea on how he can deliver on his promise
  • As Hafsa goes to bed, feeling better, Bello is left up worrying…

Acceptance into the Talent Pool does not guarantee an offer of freelance work, but the pool represents BBC Media Action’s first point of call for freelancers working on our dramas.

As freelance positions become vacant, hiring managers will contact suitable candidates from the pool to ascertain availability for roles.

Below is an outline of expected duties for the Director, which may also be expanded upon to suit the needs of the drama as required.

  • Creatively oversee the complete, timely and high quality recording and post-production processes of BBC Media Action drama series
  • Apply artistic vision in understanding and interpreting the compelling storylines and thematic focus in the drama scripts 
  • Direct the recording artistes to get them to fully understand the story arcs, mood, tempo and plotlines of the drama series, and help them act out their characters in a way that fulfills the scope and vision of the scripts. 
  • Collaborate with the Sound Engineers to ensure high quality sound recording, including proper levels during all scenes (paying particular attention to crowd scenes).
  • Work with the Sound Engineers during post-production to shape what was recorded on set into dynamic, exciting, and impactful broadcast episodes.
  • Report to the Head of Production, and work with the Assistant Producers, to resolve any logistical or operational issues that come up during recording or post-production.
  • Perform any other duties as required
