The African Small and Medium Enterprises Association (ASMEA) is a not-for-profit organisation established under the auspices of the African Small and Medium Enterprises Directory (ASMED) for African entrepreneurs, by African entrepreneurs in association with the Transatlantic Negotiation School of Business. With wide-ranging services and training programmes, ASMEA strives to equip member SMEs with the business knowledge and market opportunities to help them grow their businesses.


ASMEA, as the first Association of African SMEs in Africa, bridges the public and the private sectors to promote a more conducive business environment which facilitates the start-up, growth and development of a larger pool of SMEs.

Job description

Membership Retention and Recruitment

Ø Develop and implement membership plans with the Group President for retention of members and growth of new members.

Ø Coordinate, manage, track, and evaluate all membership and renewal activities, including new member, 
renewal, and potential member mailings.

Ø Work with membership committees to develop programs and services for members.

Ø Coordinate all details of membership meetings and receptions including development of materials, 
working with other staff to obtain information for dissemination, and ensuring meeting logistics are 

Ø Develop membership marketing and promotional materials, including applications, welcome kits, 
certificates, membership cards, and other collateral, in collaboration with the Communications 

Ø Work with Finance department to ensure financial tracking of membership.

Ø Oversee exhibit details for any trade or consumer shows including development of materials, shipping 
and receiving of exhibits, ensuring exhibits are complete and in good working condition, ordering 
signage and other materials for booth, etc.

Ø Ensure membership lists are updated on client websites on a monthly basis.

Chapter Management

Ø Work with Chapter Managers on recruitment and retention of chapter members. 
Ø Coordinate, manage, track and evaluate all chapter membership and legitimacy of chapters. 
Ø Work with Finance department to ensure financial tracking of chapter membership. 
Ø Develop marketing and promotional materials for chapter member recruitment and retention with the 
Communications department. 

Database Management

Ø Oversee all client databases and ensure the information is kept up-to-date and accurate. 
Ø Work with Director of Conferences & Events to track all sponsorship/exhibitor details for each client. 
Ø Track all certification information for each client having certification programs.


Ø Work with the Group President to ensure that partnerships and affiliations with external organizations are 
tracked and to ensure fulfillment of MOUs. 
Ø Develop promotional materials, working with the Communications department, to promote benefits of 
partnerships and affiliations. 
Ø Work with Director of Conferences & Events to produce/coordinate special programming for clients 

 Ø Work with staff on communicating member needs, services and pertinent information for client 
websites, newsletters, and other communication vehicles. 
Ø Respond to requests for information from members and other constituents. 
Ø Develop membership specific budgets for client budget meetings and track financial progress of 
member recruitment, and retention to share at budget meetings. 
Ø Suggest new polices and updates to existing policies related to membership/chapters for each client. 
Ø Actively participate in staff meetings. 
Ø Other duties as required and directed by the Group President

Desired Skills and Experience

Let’s be clear: this is an all hand-on deck environment working on an urgent campaign with an ambitious timeline, so you’re going to be doing everything from innovating cost effective mechanisms to monitoring a 24-hour news cycle, to getting banners printed at 10:30pm at the only open print shop in the night before an event through delegation.

But if you’ve got ideas for how to build a membership army with a limited budget, an eager community of individuals, and a robust database; if you know how to turn a roomful (or a chat room) full of members into a team of leaders; if you want a chance to be part of something world-changing at a pivotal moment in our continent’s history – you could be the perfect candidate.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic self-starter who: 

  • Has the drive to build the professional movement into an unstoppable force that can change lives, impact policy, and ensure SMEs have access to best-in-class resources;
  • Has led successful labor, community, political, or other member organizing campaigns;
  • Has successfully managed staff; can hold paid and un-paid organizers to high standards of accountability and productivity; while keeping them happy;
  • Is a stickler for precision in real-time tracking and assessing of campaign development; can create or adapt to a system that provides a 360 degree perspective of numerous simultaneous campaign activities;
  • Has a track record of integrating online and offline strategies to grow membership;
  • Is proactive and forward thinking, has creative vision, intellectual quickness, curiosity, discipline, and resourcefulness;
  • Is candid and forthright about flagging problems and/or mistakes;
  • Is an experienced organizer who is at home in a fast-paced campaign environment;
  • Has top-flight planning skills; is comfortable coordinating numerous time-sensitive projects; skilled in risk analysis and mitigation; able to develop and abide by clear goals, timelines, and priorities;
  • Is an excellent communicator; writes efficiently, speaks persuasively, and is comfortable making presentations to a diverse range of audiences;
  • Is voraciously multi-talented and willing to learn and do anything to see the job through;
  • Has demonstrated people and project management skills;
  • Is skilled in the subtleties of motivating, directing and working with diverse, strong, independent personalities and work styles;
  • Can provide strategic guidance and support to create an ambitious, high impact, and well-researched campaign;
  • Can create a culture of innovation in which people are allowed to try things and even fail—but fail fast--and win big;
  • Has a positive attitude and great sense of humor;
  •  Is available to travel frequently.

Bonus Qualities

  • Familiarity with the full range of new social and digital campaign tools;
  • Experience with new media applications;
  • Knowledge of engagement and/or network organizing;
  • Experience working within the limits of grant or partner-led projects;
  • Experience managing remotely.
