1. Purpose

The Team Leader, Visa Consulting, SSA, will manage the team that deliver high quality Consulting projects for clients in SSA countries and also undertake certain Consulting engagements for top Visa clients. She/he will provide leadership to the SSA consulting team. He/she plan and manage the production pipeline for consulting solutions delivered by the team. He/she will provide know-how and draw on their deep domain knowledge and expertise to provide to clients, that will enable enduring, strategic relationships with our clients. The role will mentor the SSA VC team members.

The Senior Director will have had significant, highly credible experience and knowledge within the payments cards space either through a senior position in a world class cards business, or through a reputable cards specialist consultancy firm.

2. Principle Responsibilities/Key Results Area

1.Visa Consulting SSA Team Management

Manage, and retain a team of expert consultants and provide direction and inspiration for the team.

Plan and organize the pipeline and delivery of solutions and allocate team resource to execute the required commitments.

Provide guidance and managerial support to the team as they proceed about their work.

Provide resolution to complex project planning requirements and ensure the correct solutions are provided or developed for the projects at hand.

Develop their DRs to be significant contributors to the clients and the Visa Business

Facilitate team meetings and workshops to enable creative problem solving and/or transfer domain knowledge, helping team to realize project objectives across multiple clients.

Manage the team’s budget, schedule, resource allocation, development and performance to the highest standard.

In cooperation with the Consulting Hub Head, ensure the team has cutting-edge solutions that are constantly enriched, replenished and reviewed.

Ensure the team skillset is at the right level and constantly reviewed and enriched to ensure relevance with the market

Recommend approaches, providing guidance to the team and ensure on time delivery of all required project solutions on time.

Needs to nurture and evolve the communication and feedback loop with in-market, analytics experts and the hub team to ensure that there is local consulting pyramid of production and delivery of highly effective consulting solutions in his area.

2. Solutions planning and design.

Help design specialist consulting solutions to client requirements, striving for innovative and efficient approaches. This requires deep knowledge of card profitability

Understand market trends and requirements and provide feedback to the hub team for solutions that need to be produced centrally. Produce applicable solutions locally if warranted.

Import and disseminate knowledge of solutions form the hub within the team.

Be the ultimate subject-matter expert resource for Visa Consulting SSA.

3. Thought leadership.

Develop frameworks and consulting approach for the VC SSA team as required and within the entire card management spectrum.

Direct the development of resources and tools that can be used in Consulting engagements, including by other local team members.

Make keynote presentations at local client and industry forums.

Engage with and influence senior level client contacts in the specialist area.

Be a thought leadership provider for their geography Country Heads and Senior Management.

4. Engagements and Solutions Delivery.

Sell and manage the selling of Visa Consulting projects to internal and external stakeholders. Manage and grow the Consulting pipeline.

Undertake top-client projects if needed, including project road mapping, client interviewing, analytical review of inputs, structuring of recommendations, report writing.

Bring deep specialist subject matter expertise to bear in undertaking card portfolio management engagements.

Import into their market and / or develop superior methodologies for VC Solutions

Have a deep understanding of all card product profitability and management, to follow a holistic approach framework, but also because engagements may vary.

Assignments of the team will typically involve four to five key stages including defining the scope, understanding clients objectives, framing the problem or opportunity, developing solutions that solve for the problem, doing the analysis and recommendations and selling the solution and results to clients or internal team members. The Team Leader is responsible for overseeing that each member of the team goes about all these stages in efficient manner

Perform deep analysis, map and understand gaps and areas of improvement in solutions for Visa Consulting

Identify solutions required and manage the local pyramid of production and delivery.

Be the champion of the Visa approach to very senior Visa and client decision makers.

Provide actionable solutions and design implementation plans.

5. Collaboration.

Collaborate seamlessly with the Hub Team and the Analytics Business Partners to ensure appropriate planning, resource allocation and delivery of project solutions.

Train the market teams on developed and off the shelf solutions and approaches

Foster partnership with other functional areas, ensuring alignment of opportunities and recommendations particularly with product functionality and availability.

Provide subject matter expertise support and knowledge transfer to the wider Consulting team.

6. Team Leadership.

Lead, inspire and manage the consulting team in SSA. Provide thought leadership and develop reports to contribute to clients and Visa.

Gain the respect of the team members and of all VC CEMEA leadership team

Drive awareness of the specialist consulting solutions within SSA and ensure team is properly trained.

Share knowledge and learning’s with team members and train members to keep skillset sharp.

Select and manage any local consulting partners involved in the delivery of consulting engagements.

Be the champion of the Visa Consulting team and each of its members in their area.

3. Strategic Nature, Mgmt Accountability, & Scope

A consultative approach and deep cards portfolio management knowledge is required. Excellent knowledge of available solutions and methodologies. Excellent strategic management and resource coordination and motivation skills. The individual is required to showcase knowledge and expertise within team and to direct the team to produce highest calibre of output. Travel may be required within SSA approximately 25-30% and CEMEA 5%.

4. Decision Making & Complexity

This role is responsible for managing a team of SMEs and running it with the upmost efficiency

The role is responsible for solving for complex management and resource allocation as well as consulting requirements and structuring the most efficient approach.

This role is responsible for developing, building and delivering the pipeline of work in their area, providing thought leadership to Visa key clients and marketing consulting solutions in all the areas of card management to Visa clients.

The role is responsible for ensuring 100% accuracy in all analysis and report outputs produced by the team.

This role is responsible for matrix managing any other individuals or teams involved in a given client engagement, if lead by this role for project purposes.

The individual in this role must be alert to opportunities and proactively identify "value-add" consulting solutions as well as new thought leadership initiatives such as development of best practices, case studies and seminar topics.

Needs to nurture and evolve the communication and feedback loop with in-market, analytics experts and other Consulting team to ensure that there is an engine of production and delivery of highly effective consulting solutions

5. Financial & Organizational Scope

Manage Visa Consulting SSA budget to ensure cost effective, quality service from all suppliers as needed. Monitor budget and report monthly on performance against budget. Manage personal travel budget component and ensure phasing as required.

This role involves eventually managing delivery of approximately 20 client assignments per annum through the SSA Consulting team. Client assignments will vary in nature.

The incumbent will engage and influence very senior level client and Visa staff. He will be a member of the leadership team of Visa Consulting CEMEA

Whilst this function is not direct revenue generating one, this role will effectively reduce Visa’s costs and enable Visa to realize additional revenue from our partnership program investments.

This role has considerable potential to influence incremental purchase volumes and stronger relationships with Visa’s key clients.

6. Reporting Relationships & Interactions

Role is based in Johannesburg, South Africa and reports to the Head of Visa Consulting, based in the same office.

The incumbent will manage a team of senior SMEs that conduct assignments across CEMEA and may occasionally have to manage assignments themselves ( for top clients)

In addition to working very closely with the SD Team members and Senior Leaders of the Consulting in-market teams, this role interfaces closely with other functional areas including Consumer and Commercial Credit, Debit and Prepaid Products.

Required Experience (education, skills - professional/technical/business)

Professional

Minimum 15 years experience in retail banking with a significant tenure involved in the card management with proven experience and stellar recommendations.

Should have managed senior experts before.

Experience preferably gained through a specialized cards consultancy with very targeted and verifiable work on card projects, or from a top notch world class bank with a consultative demeanor.

Global or multi-national business experience strongly preferred (e.g. with a major bank from a mature cards market such as USA, UK )

Strong academic credentials, with relevant undergraduate degree and MBA or graduate degree strongly preferred

Consulting experience at high level in cards with project management and/or process re-engineering credentials a huge plus

Superior analytical and problem solving skills, with demonstrated intellectual and analytical rigor.

Must be team oriented, collaborative, diplomatic, and influential, flexible, with superb presentation skills, including strong oral and writing capabilities.

Technical

Experience and in-depth knowledge of the cards and payments business gained through preferably 15 years of specialised managerial experience in Consulting or senior level experience in cards

Understanding of card issuers’ P&L and critical factors in driving profitability

Experience in several key issuer business areas, such as portfolio management, marketing, product management, operations, risk management, for cards

Experience in and passion for cards portfolio management and consultancy.

Experience in and passion for the power of analytics to inform and drive strategy and tactics

Expert level Excel and PowerPoint

An understanding of statistical analysis, modelling, scoring schemes, etc.

Expert level meeting and workshop facilitation skills

Business

Understanding and experience of resource management, work allocation, workload and budget management

Excellent proven managerial skills

Self-starter and able to operate independently, without detailed direction

Very detailed oriented, is expected to ensure highest level of quality/rigor in solutions development and delivery
