If what you want is to advance at your current job or with your present employer, you need to

Speak up and ask for what you want.

Ask for a meeting and talk about where you are and where you want to go,

Ask what you can do to make your career goals happen.

Plan to take the steps needed to obtain a better job.

There are times when a job search needs to be secret. If your current employer won't promote you, then you have to be quiet when you network to get a better job elsewhere.

Still you must discreetly get the word out. Let your closest friends and associates know you're looking to make a move.

Attend industry events and make connections. Let those people know what your interests are without specifically saying you are looking.

Maintain an open mind and stay curious.

Use LinkedIn in your jobhunting to see if you have any direct connections working at any prospective employers of interest.

Find out  if they have any information about a prospective opportunity, or the willingness to put you directly in touch with an internal recruiter or the hiring manager herself.

Determine what you can bring to that job that no one else can, even if they’re the perfect on-paper match.

Find and cultivate an “in” within your prospective employers.

Create an opportunity to discuss directly how and why you will be a great asset in any open roles of interest.

Think of jobhunting as your job, with you as your own boss.

Work at jobhunting full-time (or part-time, if you’re looking while you’re still employed).

Whether at your home office, a desk in an outplacement office, or a desk and chair in your bedroom, set up a jobhunting headquarters.

Acquire all the needed skills — especially computer and social media skills.

Employers now favor skilled candidates who are ready to step in and contribute immediately, without a lengthy training period.

Get the critical skills required for the types of jobs you’re going after.

Create a customized resume and cover letter for each prospective employer---and be sure they each emphasize your skills and accomplishments, abilities, achievements, and attributes that are likely to interest prospective employers in your target areas.

Network. Network. Network.

Do your research and homework well by gathering extensive information relating to the fields you’ve targeted and the companies for which you would like to work.

Read the key trade publications in your industry.

Remain current on trends and issues that professionals in your field face daily.

Position yourself as a creative thinker and problem-solver.

Stay positive and keep your sunny side up.

Always do your best to look your professional best.

Do your homework before you go to each interview.

Show up a few minutes early to each interview; be impeccably and appropriately dressed and groomed; handle yourself professionally and courteously while there; make a confident, poised entrance into the interviewer’s office; and give a firm handshake when any hand is extended for one.

Show passion and enthusiasm.

Sell yourself and your strengths.

Let the best of you shine through in your interviews.

Listen actively.

Ask open-ended questions.

Make great eye contact.

Be upbeat.

Try to be referred by a company employee or someone connected to the hiring manager.

Ask your friends to connect you to job recruiters or hiring managers.

Raise your social media profile.

Give professional speeches to position yourself as a powerhouse thought leader in your industry.

Join trade associations.

Volunteer to speak on panels.

Publish a guest post on an industry blog.

Use a personal website just for your jobhunting to show work samples.

Be specific about your skills, accomplishments and achievements.
